The world gained a new nation. On July 8, 2011, the Republic
of South Sudan officially seceded from Sudan, ending a 50-year struggle
marked by violence and civil war. South Sudan marked its independence
with celebrations that drew international dignitaries and thousands of
citizens to the capital city of Juba.
